Romans 1:3-4 (Devotion)

 Daily Devotion: Romans 1:3-4

“…concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord…”

Reflection:

In these verses, Paul introduces the heart of the gospel: Jesus Christ, fully human and fully divine.

We see the beauty of God’s sovereign plan unfolding in the person and work of Christ.

Verse 3 affirms Jesus’ humanity—He is a descendant of David, fulfilling God’s covenant promise to establish an everlasting kingdom (2 Samuel 7:12-13).

This reminds us that God’s redemptive plan is rooted in history, meticulously ordained by His sovereign will.

Yet, verse 4 declares Christ’s divinity with power. His resurrection, through the Spirit of holiness, is the decisive moment where God publicly validates Jesus as the eternal Son of God.

The resurrection is not merely a miracle but the cornerstone of our faith, proving Christ’s victory over sin and death.

God’s monergistic work—salvation is entirely His doing, from the incarnation to the resurrection.

As sinners, we are utterly dependent on this gospel. Our righteousness comes not from our works but from Christ’s perfect obedience and atoning sacrifice. Romans 1:3-4 calls us to trust in the One who is both the promised King and the risen Lord, whose power guarantees our justification and hope.

Application:

1.  Rest in Christ’s Sufficiency: Reflect on Jesus as both human and divine. His humanity assures us He sympathizes with our weaknesses (Hebrews 4:15), and His divinity ensures His power to save. Are you trusting in His finished work alone for salvation?

2.  Praise God’s Sovereignty:

The fulfillment of God’s promises in Christ shows His unchanging faithfulness. Take time to thank Him
