Devotion on Romans 1:7 –
“To all those in Rome who are loved by God and called to be saints: Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.”
Reflection:
In this opening greeting of Paul’s letter to the Romans, we are reminded of profound truths that anchor the Christian life.
Paul addresses the believers in Rome as those who are “loved by God” and “called to be saints.”
These words are not mere pleasantries but a declaration of God’s sovereign grace and electing love.
1. Loved by God:
God’s love for His people is not based on their worthiness or merit but flows from His eternal, unchanging will.
Before the foundation of the world, God chose to set His affection on His elect (Ephesians 1:4-5).
If you are in Christ, you are loved not because of what you have done but because of who God is.
This truth humbles us, stripping away any pride, and fills us with awe at God’s unmerited favor.
2. Called to Be Saints:
Paul describes believers as those “called” to be saints—set apart for God’s purposes.
God not only invites sinners to salvation but also powerfully draws them to Himself by the Holy Spirit, regenerating their hearts to respond in faith (John 6:44).
This calling is not a suggestion but a divine summons that transforms us from sinners into saints, not by our perfection but by Christ’s righteousness imputed to us.
3. Grace and Peace:
Paul’s blessing of “grace to you and peace” reflects the heart of the gospel.
Grace is God’s undeserved favor, freely given through Christ’s atoning work on the cross.
Peace is the result of being reconciled to God, no longer under His wrath but secure in His love (Romans 5:1).
These gifts are not earned but received through faith alone.
Our standing before God depends entirely on His mercy, not our efforts.
Application:
Take a moment to rest in the truth that you are loved by God—not because of your performance but because of His sovereign choice.
Reflect on your calling as a saint, set apart to live for His glory.
Are there areas in your life where you are striving to earn God’s favor rather than resting in His grace?
Confess these to the Lord, trusting that His grace is sufficient and His peace is yours through Christ.
Let this assurance fuel your worship and obedience today.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, I am humbled by Your electing love and effectual calling. Thank You for loving me before I could love You and for calling me to be Yours through the work of Your Spirit. Grant me grace to rest in Your unmerited favor and peace that surpasses understanding. Help me live as one set apart for Your glory, trusting in Christ alone. In His precious name, Amen.
