Romans 3:5 (Devotion)

 Christian Devotion on Romans 3:5

Scripture:

Romans 3:5 (ESV)

“But if our unrighteousness serves to show the righteousness of God, what shall we say? That God is unrighteous to inflict wrath on us? (I speak in a human way.)”

Reflection:

In Romans 3:5, Paul addresses a profound theological question that arises when we consider human sinfulness in light of God’s perfect righteousness.

This verse underscores the absolute sovereignty and holiness of God, contrasted with humanity’s total depravity.

Paul is tackling an objection: if our sin ultimately highlights God’s righteousness, is it fair for God to judge us?

His rhetorical question anticipates a resounding “No!”—God’s justice is never compromised, even as He uses human sin to display His glory.

God’s righteousness is not dependent on human actions but is intrinsic to His nature.

Our unrighteousness, rather than diminishing God’s justice, magnifies His mercy and holiness.

Yet, Paul quickly clarifies that this does not excuse sin or make God unjust in His judgment. God’s wrath against sin is righteous because He is holy, and His standards are perfect.

This verse reminds us that we cannot manipulate God’s purposes to justify our rebellion.

Instead, it calls us to humility, recognizing that even our failures serve God’s greater plan, though never as an excuse for sin.

Application:

1.  Acknowledge God’s Sovereignty: Reflect on how God’s righteousness shines even in the face of human failure.

Take a moment to praise Him for His unchanging holiness, knowing that He works all things for His glory (Romans 8:28).

2.  Examine Your Heart:

The doctrine of total depravity teaches that we are prone to sin and cannot earn God’s favor.

Confess any ways you’ve justified sin or questioned God’s justice in your life.

3.  Rest in Grace:

While our sin highlights God’s righteousness, it’s His grace through Christ that saves us.

Romans 3 later points to justification by faith (v. 21-26). Trust in Christ’s finished work, not your own merit.

Prayer:

Sovereign Lord, Your righteousness is perfect, and Your justice is always true.

Forgive me for the times I’ve questioned Your ways or excused my sin.

Thank You for using even my failures to display Your glory and for providing salvation through Christ alone.

Help me to live in humble reliance on Your grace, trusting Your sovereign plan.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Closing Thought:

As believers, we rest in the truth that God’s glory is the ultimate purpose of all things.

Let Romans 3:5 drive you to worship a God who is both just and merciful, and let it spur you to pursue holiness, knowing that Christ’s righteousness covers you.
