Romans 1:20 (Devotion)

 Devotional:

God’s Revelation in Creation

(Romans 1:20)

“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.”

Reflection:

In Romans 1:20, the Apostle Paul, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, declares a profound truth:

God has not left humanity in the dark about His existence and character.

From the very beginning, His eternal power and divine nature are displayed in the created order.

The vastness of the starry heavens, the intricacy of a single cell, the rhythms of seasons—all testify to a purposeful intelligent design and a sovereign Creator.

God’s self-disclosure through the works of His hands, accessible to all people, everywhere, at all times.

Yet, this verse also carries a sobering note.

Humanity is “without excuse.”

The evidence of God is so clear that no one can claim ignorance as a defense for rejecting Him.

Our natural inclination to suppress the truth (Romans 1:18) and exchange the glory of God for idols (Romans 1:23).

Despite the clarity of creation’s testimony, our sinful hearts distort or deny it, choosing self over the Creator.

This underscores our desperate need for God’s grace, revealed ultimately in the special revelation of His Word and the gospel of Jesus Christ.

As those redeemed by Christ, we stand in awe of God’s handiwork.

The same creation that condemns the unrighteous becomes, for the believer, a symphony of praise to the God who saves.

The mountains declare His majesty; the cross proclaims His mercy.

Through the lens of faith, we see not only God’s power but also His covenant faithfulness, for He upholds all things by His sovereign will (Colossians 1:17).

Application:

1.  Pause and Praise:

Take a moment today to observe creation—a sunrise, a tree, or even the air you breathe.

Let it lead you to worship the Creator, whose power and divinity are on display.

2.  Reflect on Grace:

Consider how God’s general revelation in creation points to your need for His special revelation in Scripture and Christ.

Thank Him for opening your eyes to His truth.

3.  Share the Truth:

Knowing that all people are “without excuse,” pray for opportunities to share the gospel with those who suppress the truth, trusting God’s Spirit to work in their hearts.

Prayer:

Sovereign Lord, Your eternal power and divine nature are gloriously displayed in all You have made. Forgive us for the times we overlook Your handiwork or fail to give You the worship You deserve. Thank You for Your grace that opens our eyes to see You, not only in creation but in Your Son, Jesus Christ. Equip us to live as witnesses of Your truth in a world without excuse. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Closing Thought:

As John Calvin wrote, creation is a “theater of God’s glory.” Let us, by faith, behold the Creator’s majesty and rest in His redeeming love, proclaimed most clearly in the gospel.
