Daily Devotion: Romans 1:1
“Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God”
Reflection:
In the opening verse of Romans, Paul introduces himself with humility and purpose, setting the tone for the profound theological truths he will unpack.
This verse is a rich reminder of God’s sovereign grace, our identity in Christ, and the centrality of the gospel.
1. A Servant of Christ Jesus: Paul begins by calling himself a “servant” (Greek: doulos, meaning bondslave). This is not a title of drudgery but of honor, reflecting total submission to Christ’s lordship.
We understand that our salvation is entirely by God’s grace, not our merit (Ephesians 2:8-9).
Like Paul, we are not our own; we have been bought with the precious blood of Christ (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).
Our lives belong to Him, and our highest calling is to serve Him faithfully, trusting His sovereign plan.
2. Called to Be an Apostle: Paul’s apostleship was not self-appointed but divinely ordained. The word “called” underscores God’s initiative in salvation and vocation.
God chooses His people for His purposes before the foundation of the world (Ephesians 1:4-5).
Paul’s calling as an apostle reminds us that every believer is called by God, not only to salvation but to specific roles in His kingdom. Whether as pastors, teachers, parents, or workers, our callings are part of God’s redemptive plan, and He equips us by His Spirit to fulfill them.
3. Set Apart for the Gospel of God: Paul was “set apart” (Greek: aphōrismenos, meaning marked off or separated) for the gospel. This echoes God’s electing grace, seen in Paul’s dramatic conversion (Acts 9), where God set him apart from his former life as a persecutor to proclaim Christ. The gospel is “of God”—it originates in His eternal will, reveals His righteousness, and accomplishes His purpose to save sinners. For the believer the gospel is the power of God for salvation (Romans 1:16), rooted in the finished work of Christ and applied by the Holy Spirit. We, too, are set apart to live for this gospel, sharing it with a world in need.
Application:
As we meditate on Romans 1:1, let us marvel at God’s sovereign grace. Like Paul, we are servants, called and set apart not because of our worthiness but because of Christ’s finished work. Reflect on your identity in Him: Are you living as a faithful servant, submitting to His lordship? Consider your calling: How is God using you in your daily life to advance His gospel? Rest in the assurance that the same God who set Paul apart has set you apart for His glory.
Prayer:
Sovereign Lord, we praise You for Your electing grace that calls us to be Your servants. Thank You for the gospel of Your Son, Jesus Christ, which saves us and sets us apart for Your purposes. Help us to live humbly, faithfully, and boldly as Your ambassadors, trusting in Your power to work through us. May our lives proclaim the glory of Your name. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
